Romani Roots

We are a RACE - a nomadic race  of musicians and entertainers who originated in the Asian continent over 1500 years ago. History records later enslavement  and our continued  nomadic life, as we journeyed across the world.

We reached Greece just over 1000 years. To the Greeks of the day the Rromani people appeared dark and unlike anything they had seem before and their limited knowledge led them to believe we were “Egyptians”. The area we quickly migrated to was known thereafter as “Little Egypt”, The term “Egyptian” was later shortened to “Gpystian” and finally dissolved to “Gypsy” - a term now used to describe our race.

Our race then migrated across Europe , and through out the centuries history is peppered with the enslavement , anti-Romani laws , systematic abuse and genocide of the Romani Race.

We finally travelled through northern Europe in the latter part of the 12^th Century A.d. and entered Britain just over 500 years ago.
