DVD - Romani

"Gadjo Dilo" - Tony Gatlif

Members view: Whilst the film has many Rromani actors and portrays the Romani village of the area, personally I found the sexual content alittle too much for me!

Latcho Drom" - Tony Gatlif

"Black Cat White Cat" - Emir Kurstirca

"Time of the Gypsies" - Goran Bregovic

DVD - Non-Romani with Romani content

"Chocolat"- Lasse Hallstrom

Members view: Dealing with intolerance, this film  is set in a small French Town where the local Mayor Reynoud objects to the seting up of a chocolaterie by wanderer and newly arrived Juliette (and her child) during the time of Lent.  By condeming Juliettes' actions, Reynoud divides the town and there is further upheavel as she befriends visitng River Gypsies, led by Roux. The portrayal of anomosity towards the visiting gypsies shows the public distaste of the day toward gypsies but this is wonderfully countered by the positive nature by which the Gypsies are portrayed - some may reconise "extras" who infact are Romani!

"The Man who Cried "-  Sally Potter

Members view: This is a love story between Suzy, a Russian Jew, ( who became a child refugee in England ), and a Romani Gypsy horserider Cesear, (who works in the same theatre).  The film is set in Paris at he begining of World War 2.  Johnny Depp, who plays  Cesear (pronounced CHAY - ZAR), spent 6 weeks before filming living with Romani Gypsies - his explaination? He believed that the only way to truthfully potray a Romani was to  live as one - WELL DONE JOHNNY!!  Appearing along side Johnny are the actual Romani AND the Romani muscians  TARAF DE HAIDOUKS! So the music is therefore excellant!
